Drawing as Meditation
Instructed by Damon Lehrer
This class will be an opportunity for people of all drawing abilities to come together around the act of drawing from a model in a meditative way. The purpose of the class will be to relax around drawing. It will help students become better at drawing by slowing down, paring away everything external to the process of observation and creation, and exercising the yogic idea of “compassion and non-judgment” in order to draw more successfully.
The teacher will demonstrate some drawing ideas that students can follow, and will guide and aid students individually during breaks in the drawing-meditation, but the emphasis will be on making the process of drawing into a meditative act, whatever the drawing outcome.
Each student can choose the balance of meditation vs. drawing that feels right for them. The only requirement of the students is that they are willing to stay mostly silent and maintain a respectful atmosphere so that each person is free to follow their own path during the drawing. There will be a curated set-list of musical and spoken accompaniment to encourage focus and relaxation.
Come draw, and relax your heart, brain, and spirit through an experience of communal learning.
