Prize-winning authors Josh Barkan and Jennifer Haigh read from their most recent books, Barkan's story collection Mexico and Haigh's novel Mercy Street.
Library Journal selected Barkan’s collection as one of the five best of 2017 and called it, “a near-perfect collection that's addictive, delicious, and confounding in its knife-edge ride through the hard lives of its characters." With deep empathy, and understanding of the violence taking place in Mexico, Barkan surprises with unexpected characters—a chef, painters, a beauty queen.
Richard Russo, in The New York Times Book Review, praised Haigh’s novel as, “Extraordinary... I was gobsmacked.” Mercy Street is a fearless examination of one of the most divisive issues of our time—abortion.
